Labor Day Labors



'Twas Labor Day of '44
my mother scrubbed the bathroom floor
and mowed the lawn
and fixed a door
and cleaned out every kitchen drawer.

That Labor Day, September 4,
my mother felt her waters pour
and then she labored hours more
to give me birth at ten-o-four!
